Headphone Diaries – September 24, 1991

A really huge album came out this week.

RHCP-BSSMRed Hot Chili Peppers
Blood Sugar Sex Magik

This is not that album. Except it is. Whatever.

Red Hot Chili Peppers entered heavy rotation with this album, specifically with songs like “Give It Away.” But, it was the departure song, “Under the Bridge,” that became their big hit. It didn’t really sound like most of their stuff, so of course it was the popular song.

The two things I remember most from this album are the stupid sex songs and the pictures on the liner notes of all the band’s tattoos. Both things are dumb and probably colored my impression of the band from then on. While their funk stylings on songs like “Suck My Kiss” and “Give It Away” are fun, they’re not my favorite songs by the band. Later songs, like “Californication” are probably their best songs. And, for whatever reason, I still like “Sikamikanico” from the Wayne’s World soundtrack.

I don’t know what to say about this band. Their sound isn’t something I normally go for. But it seems that they consistently create good pop songs that stand outside their normal sound and are actually pretty good. They’ve consistently managed to create good music for over two decades – that’s gotta be worth something.

Has it aged well? Juvenile songs about fucking female cops when they try to arrest you are still juvenile.

Should this go on your iPod? I would certainly not overlook a Greatest Hits type of collection of songs.
