C:tL – Eyes on Fire: Session Five

“Endless Sleeper”

Matthew has been busy at the police station, raising funds for a “community bake sale.” He gives the profits to the PCs for their “Save the Hobs” benefit.

Dani is out walking her dogs (she’s a dogwalker) when her fetch tries to run her over with her minivan. Dani is fast enough to get out of the way, but she and her fetch exchange words. Her fetch wants her dead because she’s “false” and a “lie.” Of course, Dani insists that it’s the fetch who’s false. Neither manage to work out their issues. When Uile finds out later that night, he tracks down Dani’s fetch to exact vengeance. He rips the doors off her minivan before stealing back into the night.

Meanwhile, Uile starts receiving weird messages. For one, the libretto from the opera that they found in the Hedge seems to fill a hole he had in one particular song that’s been working on. When he plays it for Darby, she freaks out, recognizing its origin in Arcadia. Another time, Uile’s receipt from Voodoo Donuts lists a strange poem:

A falcon, tow’ring in her pride of place,

Was by a mousing owl hawked at and killed

And Duncan’s horses—a thing most strange and certain—

Beauteous and swift, the minions of their race,

Turned wild in nature, broke their stalls, flung out,

Contending ‘gainst obedience, as they would

Make war with mankind.

Darby almost instantly identifies it as being from Macbeth and lays out the theory that it’s about how the world has been turned upside down. How exactly this matches with Uile isn’t known.

It is my opinion that Darby’s player has played in too many of my games, as he hit instantly upon my reasoning for including it. I’m completely fine with that, as it wasn’t meant to be a mystery…just foreshadowing.

Meanwhile, Nettle has been organizing the Summer Court into patrolling the common Hedge entrances. After the slaughter of the Hobs, the Changeling populace is on edge and Nettle has decided that the best way to protect everyone is to ban entry into the Hedge. Unfortunately, this goes against Paul, who needs some particular goblin fruits to complete some items he’s been forging. He asks Uile to go into the Hedge to get them, which Uile does. This pisses Nettle off, and Uile and her have words.

The Save the Hobs benefit is in a few days. The transition from Spring to Summer happens soon after. The city’s Changelings prepare for Tom Bramble’s easy-going governmental structure to give way to Nettle’s war footing.

The next session is probably the peak of Act One (There are acts?), so this one took on a bit of treading water in retrospect. If I recall correctly, I had some attendance issues and delayed some plot bits for the next session.
